Professor Emeritus at Osaka University Institute for Protein Research and founding Head of the Protein Data Bank Japan (PDBj). Led PDBj from its establishment until handing over to Genji Kurisu in April 2017. Central figure in the transnational launch of wwPDB in 2003 (alongside Helen M. Berman at RCSB and the EBI founding team).
