Group leader emeritus at the MRC-LMB, Cambridge. Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2009 (with Thomas Steitz and Ada Yonath) for studies of the structure and function of the ribosome. Former President of the Royal Society (2015-2020). His ribosome structures were solved by X-ray crystallography; more recently the MRC-LMB ribosome groups use cryo-EM.
